Imagination the Millionaire Mind Beginning?

In 1999 I published the first edition of Covert Hypnosis: An Operators Manual. I had imagined a new field of psychology that would emerge from what I called Behavioral Genetics at the time....that would weave into Behavioral Economics and Social Psychology. I coined the phrase "Covert Hypnosis" and the rest was history.

Today Covert Hypnosis 2020 is a hot selling book and it continues to excite people worldwide.

And it all began with imagination. That's the starting point for people who nurture a Millionaire Mind.

The Millionaire Mind is not about sitting back and waiting for the universe to deliver success while you daydream or "imagine" it.

But new research does suggest that both mental imaging and daydreaming can be a factor in future performance.

That we can in fact "dress rehearse" for success in our mind..

and daydream our way to solutions...

"Imagining something with our mind's eye is a task we engage in frequently...But how can we tell whether our own mental images are accurate or vivid when we have no direct comparison? "

...How can we TRUST them to guide us, to serve us?

.. the article above refers to a study done by Joel Pearson of the University of New South Wales, Rosanne Rademaker of Maastricht University, and Frank Tong of Vanderbilt University, who wanted to test how accurate our knowledge is of our own imagery performance.

If you "imagine" yourself completing a task successfully, how helpful will this be?

They believe that the results of their test show that..."our evaluations of mental imagery bear a direct relationship to our performance on perceptual and cognitive tasks in the real world".

We can see how things might have been.

We can see how they might be.

Being able to imagine objects and scenarios is "one of the fundamental abilities that allows us to successfully think about and plan future events," says Pearson.

So as PART of your preparation for your next speaking gig
you might want to ponder running through a successfull dress rehearsal in your mind, with as much vivid detail as possible.

In addition, research shows that while we are "daydreaming", we are problem solving for the future.

Mind wandering is typically associated with negative things like laziness or inattentiveness," says lead author, Prof. Kalina Christoff, UBC Dept. of Psychology. "But this study shows our brains are very active when we daydream – much more active than when we focus on routine tasks."

The study further points out throught the use of fMRI scanners, that our brains "executive network" – associated with high-level, complex problem-solving becomes activated when we daydream.

"The quantity and quality of brain activity suggests that people struggling to solve complicated problems might be better off switching to a simpler task and letting their mind wander".

Have you ever taken a nap when your mind was just overloaded with data and then woken up with a clear head about what needed to be done?

Daydreaming is essentially the same thing...switching to a rote task(mowing the lawn) while the brain is still working but you are not aware that you are still in "high gear"...but your brain is.

And when you get to your computer again, the solutions are there.

Millionaires prosper when others panic.

The income millionaires earn and far more importantly *keep* and *grow* has nothing to do with the majority of people losing net worth. The business woman or businessman makes a lot more money in an up economy than a down economy but regardless the majority of EARNED money by the wealthy is KEPT for securing
the future against growing government foolishness.

Today's papers are not uplifting, but those with a Millionaire Mindset you can see opportunity where others see panic. For example:

Today....The Associated Press reported, "After a string of bad economic news, U.S. consumer confidence plunged to a seven-month low in June on continuing worries about high unemployment and stagnating wages.

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index slipped to 58.5 in June, the private research group reported Tuesday. That's down from a revised 61.7 in May, which marked an almost six-point drop."

These numbers are flat out bad but the wealty individual has learned how to utilize information like this and either secure their earnings or profit more.

The housing market shows no signs of bottoming with homes selling for what they did in the very early 2000's. This makes buying pristine individual properties in high demand middle class areas a consideration, but not a great time to shell out the real estate investment money in general.

The government says it might shut down because it can't balance it's budget. We should be so lucky. Balancing the budget does absolutely zero in getting the country up from the cliff it hangs on. But most people don't realize that the government shutting down would be a long term gift not a long term earthquake.

All of that said...

Your money does not go as far as it used to. Prices are up quite a bit this year over last when you visit the grocery store.

www.thefiscaltimes.com reports about "stealth inflation -Honey they shrunk my lunch".

The author shows how over time brands we are used to purchasing keep shrinking in size. Ketchup, tuna, crackers, orange juice, toilet paper...all coming out in smaller containers with of course no lower prices.

For those who are retired or looking at retirement soon, and thinking the words "fixed income"...the situation can seem scarier still. And it should as the government continues to pilfer social security for every wasted government expense you can list.

But it doesn't have to be like that. And it *definitely* doesn' have to impact you in a terrible way.

With an outlook that is constantly searching for where your skills,expertise and loves collide, opportunity is there for you.

It is still possible, yes, even in today's economy, for people to do well doing what they love...even on a retirement income.

One of my Inner Circle members is retiring and moving to another sun drenched country. Expat. Go somewhere their government doesn't want to tax even more and more from her budget.

As she was making her plans, nearly every day she spoke with someone who wanted to "hear more about it" because they too were thinking about the same thing.
This has led to a website, ebook, and future tours. She is happy, excited, bouyant and making money from something she loves to do. Because she is a compassionate person, she also is experiencing the joy of helping people.

Ever hear of Booty Pop?

Not being a big watcher of TV, I missed the buzz, but did read about it in today's Small Business section of USA Today..."Everybody wants to have a great booty now," says Booty Pop co-founder Susan Bloomstone.

Bloomstone and business partner Lisa Reisler recognized the trend, and created undergarments that help give women a curvaceous look. Their niche product is now known worldwide.

The company has sold nearly a million units of the undergarment in three years, including in Japan, Australia and Korea. Recently, the product was mentioned in the British press in response to all the attention about Pippa Middleton's figure. Today, the garments can be found in stores such as Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond as an "As Seen On TV" product.

USA Today says you must have a good product to make it. It also mentions Brooklyn Industries, who make messenger bags from recycled billboards. Co-Founder Lexy Funk says,"It was sort of an overnite success....we were so impassioned and committed by the concept and the desire to make it work that we didn't think there was any other option."

And it did.They now have 15 stores in 4 states and revenue has grown more than 230% in the past 5 years.

But the economy is terrible, right? :)

In GENERAL it absolutely is. But it is an absolute cold hard fact that recession and depression periods are when the new millionaires are made. Recessions separate the Wheat from the Chaffe more so than in any other period. This doesn't mean that all the wealthy are worth more in a recession, but on a percentage basis because they are simply smarter about earning, growing and wisely investing their earnings, they do better. No rocket science.

Most people will do much worse in a recession (that isn't called a recession...but it is!)

But...it's not going to be worse for impassioned people doing what they love and following a proven business model.

The Millionaire Mindset is the difference between those who look at the newspapers and the economic reports and say AlAS ...WOE is ME....nothing can be done!

Getting Paid for What You Love? Here's How...Exactly

How can you leverage the secret of the millionaire mindset and millionaire thinking to become the next millionaire next door? What do millionaires do differently for how to get rich and to how to make more money than most people?

I'll let you in on some secrets and will tell you exactly how....

Claim: You can get paid a lot of money to sit on a beach, travel, sleep, eat good food, stay at the finest hotels, travel first class and pretty much anything I can think of...IF you are willing to let people in on the secrets of what you learn while you're having fun.

WHAT?!!

HOW can you get paid to sit on the beach sipping drinks and getting a tan?

If you can share the experience with a lot of other people, it's no problem.

Quick example...

I've never been on a cruise. Who knows why. But I know a lot of people who have...and most of them travel for free. In fact, most travel for free and get paid to take the cruise.

It's not rocket science.

Let's real quick run the simple math and scenarios.

Option A: Get 10 other people to go on a cruise with you and you go free. S.O.P. (Standard Operatiing Procedure.)

Option B: You love cruising and are going to lead a tour of the Caribbean with the help of your favorite cruise line. You and your significant one decide you want to go for free. You bring 20 people and take people to the neatest places.

Option C: You have some expertise in SOME area. Photography, magic, hypnosis, bird watching. You don't want to travel with anyone, but you do want to travel free. So you simply offer to give four one-hour presentations to others interested while cruising. You travel free. And you build a clientele at the same time. Any field, any subject. Cruise lines are thirlled to have you on board if you provide "entertainment" and help give other people a cruise they will remember. It's hard for me to think of something you can't get paid for on a cruise...

OK...

So wait... you build a clientele on a cruise ship by giving 3-5 presentations during the trip. i.e. you get paid to vacation in the sun, travel to exotic places and have fun.

Sounds pretty OK to me.

Option D: You pay for your cruise in full but keep meticulous track of everything you do, how fun it was, what others should do and not do, how to get the most out of that cruise and then you can sell an ebook online. Google Ad: 10 dangerous thing you better avoid while cruising the Caribbean. 19.95. 100 copies sold is $2000 and that covers most three day cruises and make a thousand to boot.

Option E: Do it right and combine all of the above.

Total additional thinking required...almost none.

All of a sudden...you're getting paid a lot to live the life you want to live. You're living the life of a millionaire. Doesn't take a lot of creativity. (If I can think of it, it must require very little creativity indeed!)

But what if you don't want to make a presentation to a group on a cruise? Say you just like laying on the beach and being lazy.

No problem.

Success Rituals

This theme has been exploding in my mind for the last couple of months. Having gone deep into the subject of rituals at length with Richard Brodie (author of Virus of the Mind) and Ross Jeffries (World class hypnotist and President of www.seduction.com), this June in Las Vegas, I've again concluded that rituals are one of the most powerful tools of installation (internalizing new beliefs, values and behaviors) into individuals.

Think for a second.

What purpose is served by having your family at the dinner table every night?
Of course, it helps keep the family unit together, alive and thriving.

What purpose does performing the Rosary do for a Catholic?
Right. It reduces the stresses of daily life, focuses the mind, and brings the person deeper within their spirituality.

Why say the Pledge of Allegiance before school?
To give a daily reminder to the children of the USA that they are part of a country that weighs liberty and justice as it's core values.

Before I give a presentation, I have a ritual of briefly shutting out the world and seeing myself on stage giving the performance of a lifetime and having every member of the audience excited, soaking up new information and being incredibly appreciative...watching the audience come up to the stage with smiles and their faces and "WOW!" on their lips.. I take about 3-5 minutes with this visualization/self hypnosis. The result: Almost always precisely what I visualized.

I have to confess that I've been put off by a lot of formal rituals in the past. And I still am. Not all rituals serve a constructive or useful purpose. But all rituals do have one thing in common: Rituals deeply install behaviors, feelings and beliefs into our minds and hearts. Something to keep in mind when performing someone else's rituals and creating your own!!!!

What success rituals do you have?

Are they developing your ability to make money?

Are they developing your millionaire mindset?

Write out a long list of rituals you perform daily or weekly that you didn't personally choose or decide upon to be your own.

Write down a feeling you would like to experience more often and create a simple ritual that will help you access that feeling.

It's interesting to me that when so many people want to become the next millionaire next door that they haven't really examined the millionaire thinking and mindset of a millionaire. Just take a look....

Can't buy me love.....

Money can't make you happy...
Chocolate can't make you happy (well ok, maybe chocolate...)

I'd rather be happy than rich...
I'd rather be a carpenter than a Democrat...

People think and talk about truly important things as if they are related...or not...as if what they are saying and thinking makes any sense in the real world....

Think about it...

"Money can't make you happy...."

Books can't make you happy...

Lamps can't make you happy...

Bicycles can't make you happy...

Pants can't make you happy...

Lipstick can't make you happy...

Haircuts can't make you happy....

Money doesn't buy happiness...
But books, lamps, bicycles, pants, lipstick, haircuts and dvd's...a different story, yes?

Of course not.... they have absolutely nothing to do each other.

But better is when people say, "Well, I'd rather be happy than rich."

And I think. Hello? How stupid are you?

I sarcastically think, "Well, I'd rather be a carpenter than a Democrat...because after all that statement makes a lot of sense too... right?"

Uh huh.

People think, hold onto and live thoughts and beliefs that don't even connect together and worse...they have no functional value in real life.

I'd rather be happy than stupid.
I'd rather be happy than smart.
I'd rather be happy than a home owner.
I'd rather be happy than have nice hair.
I'd rather be happy than have clear skin.
I'd rather be happy than thin.
I'd rather be happy than be a dog.

Why are people drawing these parallels in their minds?

Adding to the Kettle

Mr. Politician decides to become a banker and suggests that we (all 10 of us) borrow TONS of money from our own bank. (It sounds convoluted and illegal but actually this is how it works.) Now obviously there is NO MONEY in the bank so we have to borrow little Billy's Monopoly money...and the 10 do and IT goes in the kettle too.

So he borrows 500,000 dollars PER PERSON of the 10 (This is real by the way....2007...) and GUESS where that money is going to come from when it's time to pay it back?

Inequity?

Unfair?

Uh huh.....

It's starting to look like the 7 knew what they were doing. Party, balance and have the two pay for it when the decade passes...

But that's only because the 7 think short-term.

Those 7 are in for an utter disaster that they can't see coming. And they're not even looking.

The 2 see the tsunami coming, and they go swap their remaining pieces of paper (money) for gold and stuff like gold.

Why?

Every person had FREE CHOICE to choose their job and their lifestyle 10 years ago.
They chose to party, have balance and have a total family life. Very reasonable choice. Nothing wrong with that choice. No judgment.

But they didn't plan to become a millionaire next door. They didn't start their own home business. They didn't work on becoming the next internet millionaire. No problem. Their choice.

However....

But now Mr. Politician convinces those that balanced, that where the 10 of us has come to - is inequitable.

Damn right it's inequitable.

We lost out on 10 years of partying, familying and balancing. And now we've got to play while the other 8 get to bust their butts and pay for the roads, national insecurity, welfare, art in the White House and other such necessities....right?

Wrong.

Nope.

Silly Kevin...

The majority is broke because of their decisions. And the majority has determined that although everything that happened to them was their choice, now it is time to make something happen to you and I...leaving you and I NO CHOICE.

"Allow us to steal from you voluntarily submitting or we'll have you tossed in the whosgow."

Now. This isn't the way it was set up from day one.

From day one we lived in a free society. A society of choice. A society where women decided what to do with their bodies and where you and I decided to bust our butts to secure our future for our families.

But you and I were foolish about one thing...

In a tone reminiscent of Bill Murray in that magnificent 1981 movie, Stripes, we were STUPID enough to believe that the rules wouldn't change.

And the new tax now goes from 15% to 40% on all people in the room earning over 100,000 annually.

The doctor is REALLY torked. He's what's known as "middle class." The guy worked 55 hours per week. Worked hard. Lots of stress and now he's got to kickout 40% of his income to the road and National Insecurity, and Spend-at-Will Fund.

He never dreamed he'd be the scam-ee.

So now you and I are earning a million annually and sending $400,000 each to "the fund." That's $800,000 between the two of us.

The doc has to kick out about $80,000 leaving him only $120,000 for his work, almost as little as he had when he started 10 years ago (and even less when inflation is considered).

He is REALLY upset because he already has to kick out insane amounts of liability insurance, but again it was his choice. But it wasn't his choice to have almost HALF of all of those hours stolen from him and given to someone who was balancing doing tai chi and hanging with the family at picnics.

His plan like yours and mine was to work while you are young and can produce most efficiently and rest when the work is done.

So, the 800,000+ goes over to the 7 in a BIG kettle and they get 100,000 plus in money per person.

It's funny.

Researchers for years have studied the effect of winning the big lottery jackpots.

Do the people become more happy? (Don't worry we'll talk about just what "happy" is in a minute.)

Answer?

Only for a few months.

Then they return to their old level of happiness. Almost every study I've seen shows this to be true. Hit the big one and life is back to normal in a couple of years.

This has nagged at me for a long time because I've lived dirt poor, and I have lived at every socioeconomic level between the bottom 10% and the top 10%. I've known a significant number of other people who have done the same, or close. I spent almost 15 years in the bottom 10% and 30 years in the bottom half.

So, what is it that is in the millionaire mind and their millionaire mind thinking? Fact is overall, my impression has been that people are definitely happier when they have higher incomes.

In fact, overall they seem to have slightly less stress, fewer worries, are healthier, live longer, you name it.

That's not scientific. It's just my experience.

And by some stroke of luck, my impression is correct when you do the real research...and not just looking at those who went from poverty to the top 1% in an hour.

A Change in the 'Rules'

"There is no good reason that two people should earn 82% of the income. None. It's wrong. It's inequitable. And there is only one thing to do... and that is increase the taxes on those who have money."

You and I look at each other like this guy has lost his mind. He's crazy, right? He chose his job. He had his life of balance. He got his life desires.

And now he wants to become a politician and redistribute/tax (steal) your money and mine.

He argues, "Each year the wealthier get wealthier and the poor get poorer."

You and I look at each other, "Duh, you don't do diddly except balance yourself all day."

"Therefore we will now VOTE to tax the two people at 40% while our 8 taxes will stay at 15% of our income because we live and struggle from day to day."

Huh?!

An election is held. Like the one that is coming up, Decision 2008. Barack Obama/Joe Biden or John McCain/Sarah Palin.

You know a democratic election... where the MAJORITY RULES.

You and I didn't run for office, because we are getting ready to invest our life's earnings and live off the interest and dividends with our family.

But hold on....you and I have lots of unexpected big time problems coming...

Because life just changed.

The majority took a vote...

We now will be literally paying for the other 7/8 people to party.

Just like Robert Reich, President Clinton's former Advisor said, "It's not fair that income distribution is spreading." You're telling me...

You and I laugh.

Hello?

Who foots the bill? Because, there is still a bill to be paid, right?

You moron. Your "redistributed income" is paid for by my stress and exhaustion while you sit whining about someone in China.....

And our Mr. Politician (or Ms. Politician...) buddy here now has decided that he's older, has no savings, partied his whole life, had lots of quality balance and family time...that you and I do NOT get to have those same things.... Well, he's decided that all of those personal life choices are water under the bridge...

So the plan is that the 7/8 will steal the 40% while you and I sleep and they will then go party on that. This is "wealth redistribution."

Now think about it...If YOU do this and don't "work" for the government it's 10 years in the slammer...BUT if you work for the government it's called "tax" and because the "majority voted" it's OK.

Except it's not OK. The 7/8 now learn it's OK to party today and steal tomorrow. Their children learn that, they live that. A few will break away from the theft mentality but only a few.

In the United States, the top 1% earn almost as much as the other 99% together.

Is that "fair?"

I've been reading propaganda out of Berkley saying that it's not. ....That if the government put a much bigger tax on land, etc., that the "poor" would have a more equitable share of income.

STOP.

Wrong.

What is Fair?

Income is something you earn..."wealth redistribution" ONLY causes disasters...there have never been exceptions. Could we name a few countries? Yes. Earn money.

(You can't steal from someone without consequences to the thief and the victim.)

Social Security, Medicare, Medicade and other income redistribution plans are just that.

The government can play Robin Hood, but on a macro or micro level you can't change behavior of those that refuse to work more than 8 hours each day, or want balance, or want anything more than they do than work.

So today, and for the next several weeks, please, play a game with me. We'll call it The Money Game. With a $700 Billion Bail-Out, we all need to think abut this, don't we.

I need your help for this scenario:

Imagine 10 competent, able people competing in a REALLY BIG reality TV show home. Men, women, parents, single folk. You and me are two of them. We all walk in the door having been obligated to quit our previous job.

Part One: The Career Choice Stage

There are 30 different jobs to choose from.

10 of them are sales jobs.

Others include jobs as medical doctor, government worker, and so forth. We all get to leave the house to go to work but must return after we are done working. Some of us have babies and children in the house. Some of us have spouses. Some don't...all the families live in this BIG house....

You and I are smart enough to know that there are only a couple of kind of jobs that are "secure" and have a chance to pay enough to cover the bills, taxes, and build some kind of a squirrel's nest for when disaster strikes the family. (Financial planners who have never personally been through hell call this the "six month rainy day fund." These morons have never experienced what disaster is. They have no idea those "six month rainy day funds" dry up REALLY fast and do no good for the next three years after the Dad dies. Maybe they'll start prepping people to save for 3-5 year rainy day funds after reading this...

I don't know about you but I grew up with the "knowledge" that the orphanage was a viable option if Dad (step-dad) didn't live a few more years. I've seen people who were in tougher conditions but not many with less money.

So, for you and me....Let's see there is...Sales...and sales. Sales careers are some of the best out there for regular people to reallye earn money and to create the financial reserves they need.

Everyone else?

Of course, chose jobs that don't produce a profit for the companies that will be paying their salaries.

That puts them at grave risk.

You and I are in sales, we have essentially little or no risk, although we do wake up "unemployed" every day, and we have a 10-12 hour day.

Nevertheless, our incomes are totally dependent on our work. So, if we produce 18x and we get paid proportionately.

So off we go into our world.

At the end of one year, you and I have earned $100,000.
So did the person who was qualified to be a doctor.
The other seven?
They chose jobs that weren't income producers.
So how did they do? They all earned about $40,000 per year. They had "balance." They got to spend more time with their families than we did. Nothin' wrong with that.

There is no doubt: Family matters more than anything.

Over the next five years, we salespeople got better at our jobs. We built our business portfolios. Now? We have doubled our sales, and indeed even triples our sales. We are now earning $300,000 per year. Still lots of hours by most people's standards. Frankly, maybe up to 70 per week. Relationships at home? They are a bit tense compared to our "balanced" friends but we're hanging in there.

Everyone else, except the doc who is now making $150,000 annually is still making about the same $40,000 per year. They have "balance." They get to spend a lot of time with their families. They wanted a "life" and are living that desired outcome with the corresponding $40,000.00 income. They are connected. Cause and effect. OK? Get it?

Five years later, you and I were consistent at our jobs. Our portfolios of business had grown to about $1,000,000 in commissions each. The doc is making about $200,000 annually and the seven people who chose the "balanced life jobs? Their income has risen to a whopping... $50,000 annually.

They think they are making more than they used to make... But they are wrong. In actuality, they are making less after inflation. But they don't get that. They will be blissfully ignorant....for awhile.

Now that's 8 people in the "room" that have a combined income of $600,000 annually.

2 people in the room have a total income of $2,000,000 annually.

You and I are earning about a million annually. The two of us earn about 82% of the money even though we only make up 20% of the population.

Obviously our dream is now opening up. It's now OUR turn to love and live... We now choose to live the life we have always desired...

But even in this world, we don't live in a vaccuum...

Now one of the ten in the room decides that this is "not fair."

Guess what happens now?????

How Passion Emerges

These are the other things we become passionate about...if they are ever created in the first place. For most people, they never are...because people "looked" where they needed to be creating and building.

Fresh passion can be powerful. Most often it develops when you are creating. Building a house, writing a book, painting, making something that wasn't before. A new business. Even a new job that has things that you like to do.

But more often passion is about creating and then being proud of that creation, defending that creation, seeing it as an improvement on other similar things to it "out there."

It is here that the burning desire is lit. The flames are fanned when you have invested your self into the process of creation or growing or building and soon it becomes *part of your identity.*

Then "it" is a "front page item" in your life.

Once lit, the burning desire will do just that. It burns. It burns hot. There is no self motivational affirmation that will make it grow hotter...or cool it down.

Does the woman who is "pro life" need affirmations to increase her passion about her belief? Her identity? What about the woman who is "pro-choice"? Does she need daily affirmations to improve her passion about her belief? Her identity?

Passion comes from identity and identity, with rare exception, is generated in one of the four ways mentioned earlier.

For the person who aspires to some level of greatness or achievement, passion is what makes the car go....what makes the body move.

Where do you see passion? I saw it on the front of the newspaper yesterday. In almost every headline. What about you?

Big article about reproductive issues (pro life vs. pro choice). That's no surprise. You have the second most powerful driver of human behavior and people are going to have an opinion and strong feelings about it.

Passion, of course, wires into all the fears in the brain as well as the drives.

Example:
One man perceives another man as a threat and adrenaline flows. The competitive (and sometimes deadly) nature of man kicks in. It becomes a focal point of consciousness. A point where nothing else matters. That's true passion. One example.

(Notice: I didn't say whether he was a threat physically, at work for a job, or with your spouse, or intellectually...but your mind went where the fear is in your brain. Fascinating huh?)

The fear can be real or imagined, but the ensuing behavior is powerful and passionate. Failure to keep that fear under complete control keeps doctor's offices and jails at capacity.

Passion and IdentityAnother thing people are passionate about is their identity. I remember not too long ago a really odd thing. The front page of the newspaper one day had commentary about the torching of the Denmark Embassy in Lebanon. Denmark has never been much of a threat to any country. But one man, drawing one cartoon in a newspaper ignited a firestorm of hatred in thousands (maybe millions) of people. The newspaper showed people in the streets in rage over cartoons. The photos showed the emotions on the faces of people who felt the importance of their identity (deep beliefs and feelings about who we are) attacked.

KEY POINT: People are passionate about their identity. They simply do *not* think of it in that way, though.

I visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam a couple of years ago. It was a profound experience. It reminded me of how Hitler utilized the idea of identity to polarize people, to execute them en masse and to create cohesion in his own country by giving his people an identity model.

In other words, "we" are OK. "We are normal/good/chosen." Anyone who was a Jew or a Pole or whoever else wasn't *like* your typical German, or was, in the way of creating a single world empire, those people were portrayed as threats. Their identity was different. They needed to be eliminated for the plan to work.

What was interesting was that on the way in to the home, not inside but on the way in, was a small room where a film was being shown. It was about how Hitler began to mark where people lived, what their status was as far as religion and so forth. Then it compared what that regime did with what was happening in the USA as far as "The Patriot Act."

I told the people that The Act was only a tool to combat terrorism, nutjobs who pop planes into buildings.

The dozen or so people watching the film completely disagreed. My very IDENTITY as a FREE AMERICAN was being threatened for some reason on some level. I gave a thorough description of the Act.

They all laughed, some told me I was naive, a couple looked at me with pity. None were angry or upset with my defense of the USA.

And today of course, I realize how wrong I was and how right they were. Bringing myself to admit that my personal freedoms are being limited significantly (where I can invest, what the government demands to know about income, expenses, pretty much everything) was something that really took a bit of time to sink in. I used to be proud to think and verbalize that the US was a completely free country. And of course, you aren't supposed to play poker on line nowadays for fear extremists are playing poker with you...(those extremists who abhor gambling, consider it evil and wrong) like extremist Senators do...

...which of course shows you the passion/identity meeting...

Passion: (noun) Driving forces that compel us to act.

Not a singular term. You might want to think of it as passions. (plural)
And Identity...the same as passion?

Not at all, but your passion comes forth from your identity.

If you don't know who you are, you will be devoid of passion. If you only partially connect with your future you will not manifest (forgive me) your obsession.

Identity...

I'm a Republican, I'm a Democrat.

I'm a Christian, I'm a Jew.

I'm pro life. I'm pro choice.

I'm a....

We are very quick to give our identity to a larger collective. Then when that collective acts in ways that are inconsistent with other parts of who you are, choices are made...do you go with the group identity or do you break with the group and stand alone?

Standing A-LONE is a LONELY thing to do and that's why we find two politcal parties in America that get television time and then you find people like me loosely affiliate with the Libertarian Party but ready to jump at a moments notice. Fortunately Libertarians generally are pretty consistent in their desired outcomes...outcomes that are pro democracy (you vote before you give taxpayer money, your money, to a big insurance company whose BUSINESS IS TO SECURE YOUR MONEY WITH THEIR WISDOM.)

We put money in banks because it is suppposed to be SAFE there. So safe it's better than having it in your floor safe....so much for that idea...what were we thinking.

Identity is what drives passion and then passion loops back into your identity.

If you have been wondering what you want to be when you reach 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or 90....and just don't know...if life is passing you by...understanding YOUR IDENTITY is crucial. Passion and Identity "feed" each other.

Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich, called this factor "a burning desire."

From a surface level view, that's partially "right." But there are far more elements of passion WITHIN your identity, that are going on than simply a "burning desire."

A gal goes to borrow money to build a bank. Loans money to people who can't afford it. Some default. Worried? Fear not..."the government" (taxpayers down the block) pays her when they default. She's fine. She makes money. Some of your customers pay their mortgage on time. She makes money.

Now THAT is a smart woman. Why would anyone start any other kind of business?!

But let's pretend that YOU don't qualify to get a loan to build a bank! What then?

Ah well..."The Secret" works for bankers but not you and me....we are back to The Achievement Factors!

Last week, we started with Self Discipline. We could have started anywhere. But it makes sense to start with the core factor of self discipline. Let's recap: Self discipline is not an attitude or a feeling. It is a discipline. It is DO-UNTIL.
Self Discipline is what makes great people great.

Then we talked about Overconfidence and the need for it's eradication.

Why?

All of the research shows that under-confident people simply can't achieve. Where there is no belief in the self or it is very small, self discipline never has an opportunity to engage.

Self Confidence is highly correlated with financial and relationship success.

Overconfidence and arrogance are highly correlated with success and then failure.

Kevin, What I hope you will pass on to readers of Coffee is the FDIC insurance is NOT what they claim it to be.

Someone (who will remain nameless) has just been ripped off of $4000 by the FDIC.
Here is the story...

She had a CD with INdyMac for $95,000 and some change. On that account it was in her name. She had her daughter as a beneficiary so the FDIC would consider it as a POD or IFT (informal trust).

Additionally, she had a money market account in INdyMac worth appx $21,000. That account had her daughter and grand daughter as beneficiaries.

According to the FDIC's advertisements "You are insured up to $100,000" and if you have a beneficiary you are insured up to another $100,000. SO according to the FDIC she should be insured up to $300,000 they refuse to honor that.

Here is how they are doing this. "Because you have the accounts set up as having a beneficiary, ONLY your beneficiary is covered, you are not. You are not considered as being alive according to the FDIC... gee I wonder if she can use that to avoid federal income tax..."The FDIC does not consider me alive so I guess I don't have to pay tax."

Because she went to a total of $117,000 (roughly) and she had 2 beneficiaries, one overlapping they are claiming the FDIC insurance does not cover $4000 because one of the beneficiaries is insured up to $100,000 and they split the money market between the two beneficiaries.
Their solution "You can sue the FDIC in Federal Court (where you need a layer) and ONLY in Pasadena CA because that is where IndyMac headquarters was located.

So I guess this is proof you can not trust the FDIC, your money is NOT safe in the banks because they will find a weasel clause to steal it from you. When I personally spoke to the FDIC about this they said "Oh, it's INdyMac's fault... we didn't take your money."

Personally, I would rather keep my money in my money in my mattress, or buried in the back yard, it's apparently safer there than in the bank.

I know I'm a bit long winded on this, and you can cut it down if you want to use it as a warning to readers of Coffee, but I think they need to be aware of FDIC small print weasel clauses to make sure you get ripped off.

Question: What is going on in the stock market as well as precious metals? Where should I have my money?

Answer: The Dow just sits at 11,500 and shakes up 400 points, then down 400 points. When will all the chips fall? Who knows...The rest of the world's markets have gotten creamed this year and although ours is down, we have quite a ways to go down before we equal what decimation has happened elsewhere.

Gold looks like a decent buy right now. It's cheap at $750 and I buy gold coins regularly regardless of price. (Dollar Cost Averaging, if you will...)

I've pulled a pile out of gold stocks and put that into CD's that pay 3%. When they settle down that and oil will make a lot of sense. Until then, I'll wait out the various big guns keeping the prices artificially low.

Overall, there is no paper investment (stock or currency) that looks interesting in any way right now. Now...shorting the dollar .....looks interesting....but I don't do that kind of stuff....

One year ago....they would have all laughed....

No one in the United States outside of Alaska, knew who Sarah Palin was. (I don't know who the Governor of Iowa is, and I live 90 minutes north of the border, so don't feel bad.)

Then, in a first-class shocker that no one on the planet saw coming, Senator John McCain throws the dice on running with a woman who could become the first woman to be Vice President in the US. That he picked a woman is not wild. In fact, it fits with what the Democrats didn't do. (They make lots of mistakes...though Joe Biden was a great choice...)

Now when the history books are written, if Sarah Palin becomes Vice President, what will be the "success story?"

Preparation meets opportunity....become Governor of your State and your chances of becoming President of the United States dramatically increase.

(When I get to thinking about Alabama, I think about Church...ah well...) Jesus put it best (as he often did).

"To he who has much, much will be given. To he who has little, it shall be taken from." Jesus was a pretty wise man, and in my experience people who are responsible (at cause) are given more responsibility and entrusted with more ...far more than those who are not responsible (at cause).

Later Jesus also tells the story of the talents. (In Biblical culture the word Talents refers to coins, yup, that'd be MONEY, now I have your attention, right?)

Now, to one man he gave 5 talents.

To another 3.

And yet to another 1 talent.

The first man doubled his money, and Jesus acclaimed him for his work.

The second man, given less (nothing is fair or equitable in life) also doubled his money.

But the third man given one, came back to Jesus with just the one talent, afraid that Jesus would be angry if he lost it. Jesus not only became angry but called the man "wicked and slothful," for burying it in the ground. The man did NOTHING with the money Jesus gave him.

There was no pension plan in Jesus' mind. Only personal responsibility and action.

These two stories from the Bible are the core of my philosophy in wealth building. People who do not find these stories in their belief structure are very likely to fail like the wicked and slothful servant.

Beyond a certain point, the more you give to a person, the less they can do for them SELF.

If you don't teach your kids how to cook, they will eat burgers and pizza (fast food and take out) for the rest of their lives. And yet, when you teach them How to cook , what happens? They will eat well and look good for a long time.

Self responsibility is a crucial differentiating factor in wealth and barely squeaking by.

Last month at the Venetian in Las Vegas, I was playing blackjack and the table was, unfortunately, "cold." The cards were favoring the house in a dramatic way. While I was there playing, as so often happens, another player got up from the table, yelled at the dealer - as if the dealer had anything to do with the losing streak, and stomped away.

The fact is, the dealer, the cut, position at the table, NOTHING significantly effects the cards you are given beyond random chance. They are all face down. Even if someone makes a bad decision and "it costs you" money, the fact is that, over one million hands, it makes no difference what the guy before or after you does.

That is HARD to swallow, because blaming someone takes the responsibility away from SELF. And it's what a lot a people are used to doing, isn't it?

But Responsibility means that when you don't make money, you only have one place to accept responsibility.

BTW, this is not about Blame.

And that is... in YOURSELF.

The sole initial cause of the person's demise was their willingness to sit down at the table in the first place. That could also be the initial cause of victory but the wealthy person accepts responsibility for success...and failure.

When someone says, "The pension fund went bankrupt," the initial cause of responsibility is not with the company that cheated the person out of their money or mismanaged it, but the individual's illusion that someone other than them SELF should be responsible for their life and livelihood.

Frankly, it's really simple math, but people just don't want to think about it. Well,not most people. But you're probably not in that group if you're reading this, are you?

You can't get paid money when there is no productivity to return for the money, or the "system" will go broke.

My fourth-grader can show anyone how this works, but that's because I taught him that you need to have money in the account to take out. With pensions, it's not there and ultimately, not just an individual, but a generation will have been sold down the river....

I have never heard a wealthy person talk about "collecting" social security or a pension. Wealthy people want or demand to be responsible, at cause, for their income, passive income, wealth and legacy. They "collect" other things!

People who read Coffee with Kevin Hogan email me asking questions about How to Get Rich and what they can do to get rich. They want to know how to make money and how to make more money. Some of them are looking to get out of debt. Some are unemployed, and with how the economy is right now, there will be more of those jobless folks.

What's my first advise to them?

Read

One of the things which the rich do differently than most folks is... they read. And they are not just reading just any ole book. They are mentally having conversations with millionaires, billionaires, and learning from them.

Exposure to MasterMinds Through Books, Seminars and CDs.

When I really started to read I was selling advertising and all kinds of stuff. What did I want? I wanted to get by, get out of debt.

Then I started reading again.

You don't really Read in college.

You study. (Well, at least that was me.)

I don't recall thinking to myself, "Hot dog, I get to read the Calc' book tonight!"

No, for me it was Torture 101 followed by Hell 303 and Transylvania 505.

And it was history…

I was selling everything and anything to survive again…just like when I was a kid. Sound familiar?

And I started reading books about selling.

I hadn't seen Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich since I was a little kid.

I read it.

I was so enthralled with the Readers Digest-sized stories of Edison, Ford, Bell, Roosevelt and so forth.

How I wanted to be in that category!

But the great longing wasn't there often, as I was cranking out 60-70 HPW (hours per week)

Ya' get back to the apartment.
You throw an Elvis record on.
You let your body stop aching.
…do it all over again in the morning….and on and on and on and on… terminal loop.

And I finally got sick of it.

I get bored very quickly with monotony. I had suppressed it for years.

It finally blew.

I decided I would take all these lemons and make some Gatorade.

I took my pennies and turned them into dollars and went and saw Tommy Hopkins. Zig Ziglar. Brian Tracy. Dennis Waitley.

I had to.

I listened to them in the car between appointments over and over and over. I knew their stories better than they did.

I felt like they were talking to me...

And in a sense... they were.

Even more important was listening to W. Clement Stone, Earl Nightingale and Napoleon Hill.

I had no idea what being wealthy would look like or feel like.
But one thing was sure, I had a mastermind in my brain that was second to none.

I wanted to do…what they did.

What did they do?

They made me feel better.

They encouraged me when I was down. (The only time I wasn't down was ….well…I'm sure there was a time…I just don't remember it.)

I read all "the books," went to "all the seminars," Picked Brian and Zig as my "go to" mentors. (Napoleon Hill and Earl Nightingale had passed away just a few years before.)
I listened to all of those audios over HUNDREDS of times.

What is your annual income?
Now that you've got that figure in your head, double it.

Now, write that down on a piece of paper. Write down your income doubled from what it currently is.

Now, write down one year.

Now, if you were to take that figure and then write down everything you need to do to get there, you'd have a list of things to do.

That list would start out as Your Money Making Action Plan.

This is how it starts.

As you write that list out, think about how you would obviously need to make personal changes to accomplish this outcome. Of course.

If you utilize this strategy which is grounded in Napoleon Hill's philosophy, you will find yourself apart from 90% of the rest of the population. (98%)

I mean, more than 90% of the population does not write down goals.

Just by your doing so, you just put yourself in the elite percentage of success-oriented people.

You are then doing what wealthy people do: set goals and plans.

Secret: Wealthy people don't think of "goals" as "goals," they think of them as "projects" on their "to do" list. There is no "wondering" if something can or will get done…they wrote it done. They go to work on it. They get it done.

Period. End of sentence.

Look, most people just react and go through the motions in life. Most do the minimum to get by and survive. To get more than that out of life, requires doing more than the minimum.

The next semantic problem in the question is wrapped up in try.

I find it very difficult to try to do anything.

I succeed at a lot.

I fail in the short term at plenty.

And there is always effort, often LOTS of effort. But try almost implies, "Well, I gave it a shot...."

You never hear anyone say, "I tried to go to the store for groceries, but [exhale sigh] I just wasn't motivated."

You can temporarily fail to get to the store, but you can't fail forever! The word "try" has always ... bugged me.

So, our language, not the grammar, but the abstract verbal representations of what we THINK and FEEL reveals much about how and what we actually do think. It's not that it's "bad," it's just that it can reveal the inability to link cause and effect and THAT will cause ultimate failure.

7 Factors in the Science of Getting Rich

The First Issue about one of mentality is.....

Get vs. Make
The Science of getting rich is in part answered in the paradoxical question.
(What's the difference between people who try and get rich and people who get rich?)

Abstract representational change is necessary. And it's not about just how our culture phrases the question.

People who build wealth don't "get" rich.

"Get" implies something is received and yes, that is true but there is no causal implication. In other words, "make money" reveals a mindset that is different from "get rich."

The sad thing is that if I write, you are going to "make rich," it doesn't ...sound right... does it?

Words simply represent our thoughts as they are currently structured in our brain.

Now let's just think about this for a moment. Do I want to "get rich" or "make rich?" The answer of course has to be that you "make rich," or it won't manifest and MAINTAIN.

I cannot remember a single wealthy person saying, "I got rich," or "I want to get richer" or have a general thought process that put the words "get" and "rich" together.

I think this semantic distinction has gone unnoticed and is extremely important.

So much so, in fact, I strongly encourage people to avoid thinking or talking to their kids in terms of "get money," "get rich" or "get a job."

KEY: "Get" implies no personal causal element and where there is no causal element, the brain cannot link up a result to the thought. Your brain cannot show you how (think like a movie projection) to "get rich" for the very reason because it's a destination-only picture.

But the brain CAN literally show you "make money."

My first image is a printing press printing money.
That my brain identifies as a PROCESS.
It has a cause and an effect.
That's what the brain requires to BEGIN to put into motion actions that will lead to the result of wealth.

"Build wealth" is better because although wealth is hard to picture for a lot of people, at least you have the causal element, "build."

Better yet: "Build an empire."
Here you have a picture AND an action process.

"I Tried"

Six years ago, I got to moderate a really neat event. Speed Dating.

Here's the deal: 16 men and 16 women would rotate throughout the evening, spending 4, yes, that would be, count ‘em just FOUR MINUTES with each other.

At the end of the four minutes they would tick off on a 3 x 5 card if they wanted to date the person.

I ultimately guided three of these interesting events. Two in Minneapolis and one in Seattle.

What I learned was fascinating! Most interesting?

1) Women wanted to date far fewer men than the men wanted to date. (As a sex, we’re so much more flexible.... accommodating… desperate…)
2) 93% of the women told me that they knew in the first thirty seconds whether they would be willing to date the person again.
3) Almost as many men said they knew, "instantly, ““within three seconds," "right away.”
4) The more people someone wanted to date, the fewer people wanted to date (usually) him.

WOW!

The lessons of those three evenings are many and could fill a book themselves.

But for now, realize that I thought these people were “prejudging” each of their “dates” that night.

And then I realized I may not have been correct, because, perhaps we do KNOW our own yardstick very well and DO know in 3 seconds.

But some people, the other 9%, are better equipped to weather the storm. In fact, the recent data shows they will actually report record "net worths" on their financial statements.

More ways to we are always influencing others from the mind of internet millionaire, Kevin Hogan.

"Eat your food, young man." My Mom never gave up on getting me to eat vegetables. She was persuasive and had multiple intentions.

She wanted me to eat so I wouldn't be hungry, she wanted me healthy for lots of reasons, she wanted me to have a better life.

"Honey the dog is outside." Another newsflash? What do you think?

Of course not. (You already guessed that, right?)

It's a message of multiple intentions most of which are persuasive the least being, "Hey at least I put the dog out!"

Or maybe, "See! I do pitch in, I put the dog out."

Or another way to see it, "I put the dog out, let her in later on because I'm off to bed."

"I love you."

Certainly that isn't a persuasive message...

...but it is.

In fact, "I love you, " is one of the most intentional persuasive messages there is.

It might mean, "You are great and mean the world to me and please know that," where you are trying to create a bridge from your feelings to hers.

It could mean something in the future. She doesn't know you broke her necklace and when you tell her tomorrow, you'd like her to have built up a set of messages that create an image so she doesn't take your life when you tell her what happened.

Or it might mean, "Let's go to bed," or, "I appreciate you," again with the purpose of creating an image of you in addition to sending a message of appreciation. One thing is for sure there are covert messages happening here...

Does all persuasion have these covert aspects?

There is more than one way to do things..... just look at God and Abraham.....

Negotiation and Persusion from the Old Testament of The Bible:

"Dear God, Please let Daddy get a new heart. I really love him a lot."

People attempt to persuade God.

In fact a lot of people attempt to persuade and negotiate with God asking for more and offering less than in any other negotiations they enter into.

In the Bible (OT), Abraham successfully bargained for the Cities of Sodom and Gommorrah.

"Lord, if there are only 20 just men in the Cities won't you spare them destruction?"

"OK Abraham, if there are 20..."

"....if there are 10"

"Yes, Abraham..."

And then Abraham finally hit God's least acceptable result. He (God) made sure those that had an ounce of possibility in them, were out of town and then He went nuclear...and this wasn't all that long after He wiped out the entire earth with a flood.

The Bible says that God has a temper. But it also shows on numerous occasions that He can be successfully bargained with.

However, by coming on a little strong with the high-priced package at first, like I was really going to push it, and then suddenly backing off, telling them to breathe easy, because I was not going to ask them to buy it, twice as many people bought the middle product than when presented the other way.

The next experiment to determine whether this is all about people complying because of FEAR ONLY or if the reason people are complying is because they experienced FEAR and the RELIEF of fear - is the combination important?

Students were divided into three rooms.

Room 1: Anxiety-provoking (only)
Room 2: Anxiety-provoking, then reduction
Room 3: Nothing/Neutral (Control) (The anxiety was caused by the discovery of an electric shock that would be applied when they mis-spelled words.)

In ROOM THREE, the students were informed they'd be throwing darts from various distances.

The experimenter enters ROOM TWO and tells the students to go into the hallway that they will NOT be participating in the electric shock experiment but a dart throwing experiment. WHEW!

A female student approached students then in the hall one by one asking for participation in a charity event for an orphanage. Students were asked how much time they would be willing to give to the event.

OK, Building Block Number Two....

Fear and the Government sure does get your attention doesn't it?

Just like in the United States, when you illegally park, you get a ticket under your windshield wiper. Some things are just culturally consistent around the world...

The experimenters found illegally parked cars and placed leaflets that LOOKED LIKE tickets on the windshield under the wiper.

But were they?

They were actually either requests for blood donation or hair restoring shampoo promotions!

In yet another experiment the experimenters taped the leaflets to the door handle. (Not indicative of a ticket, something you would FEEL much different about, right?)

Finally, there was a group of cars that were illegally parked and nothing was done.

As each person returned to their car and was about to leave, an experimenter approached and asked the driver to give them a few minutes for a quick survey for his Master's thesis on efficient traffic.

Maybe it was because my grandfather dressed like a black guy (he was extremely hip "for" white people and fit in pretty well with blacks in dress.) Unlike my brothers and myself, he never picked up that Southern Black Accent. But we did, and every summer when we went home, people would look at us like we were from Mars the way we would talk. Now, we were just kids, not even 7 years old.

The people in Huntsville were some of the coolest, nicest people I've ever met. Now mind you, race was a HUGE issue at the time, especially in that election year of 1968. But the deal was, we never felt ill at ease, and we were welcome at people's homes for dinner. Even though in some places, white people weren't welcome.

God knows there were a heck of a lot of places that made it abundantly clear that blacks weren't welcome....and my Grandparents refused to go there.

"All people are the same in the eyes of Jesus...sinned and fallen short." It was as simple as that from my grandparent's point of view.

Now, mind you, I wasn't color blind. Indeed, Black Culture and White Culture were as different as the colors themselves. I always preferred the Black Culture. I have pictures of how we dressed in those days...it was not exactly "white attire."

And the people in Huntsville and Decatur were about as poor as poor could get. You look up the word "poor" in the dictionary and there probably is a picture of a guy from Huntsville in 1968 there.

But I didn't realize at the time how lucky I was to experience this in my life, and to have grandparents (and a Mom) who were so incredibly anti-racist.

I remember Nana, my grandmother, rolling her eyes behind her head when white people would say stupid stuff about blacks. (Although most people didn't refer to blacks as "blacks" in those days...)

...and "black" and "white" was a weekly if not daily conversation back then.

My grandparents were an enormous influence on me and they wanted me to know that as different as black and white were in some ways, in the ways that ultimately mattered, there was no difference.

Well, in real life people who build wealth DO tend to continue to work hard and build wealth in spite of the penalties given to people who strive for success, people who work two jobs and earn more money to take care of their family, etc...

AND... In real life, the people who blow their money tend to repeat the same mistakes over and over...and society rewards them...only to have them blow what they were given again and again.

In general, it's somewhat fair to say that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It just takes more effort to accomplish BOTH of those things than we might imagine. And it's all because of our emotions.

In the United States and most English speaking countries, all things being equal, anyone without major physical or mental handicaps should be able to build wealth if they choose to. And that is a true statement.

If you and I live in the same house or the same city, or state, for the most part, it's a decision as to how much money you want to earn. And the decision is yours and it's mine.
Unfortunately that person you're living with only gets taxed 15% on his income because he works 8 hours per day. You work two jobs and get taxed at 28%.

That's real life in America. It makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever.

And the guy in the bedroom next to you gets the same amount of services (or more) for doing less than you do.

Thus, those who build wealth tend to work with even more focus and determination to do whatever they can to not let society's punishments run them over. And just what happens when society is given THAT chance?

There is no question that for most people in most situations in life, "ready, fire, aim, fire, aim, fire" is THE success and anti-procrastination formula.

Which leads us to the all important question of.......

Ready, Fire, Aim, Fire, Aim...But When?

There are numerous formulas necessary to achieve and accomplish in life. Just as there are numerous formulas and key numbers in mathematics to understand the sciences.

YOUR timing IS important.

But before we get into HOW to implement this workable strategy, let's look at when it is the WRONG strategy.

Rule One: If the Error Cost in a Situation is High and the Time to Implement for a NECESSARY Outcome is Long, then you Should NOT use Ready, Fire, Aim, Fire, Aim, Fire.

That means if you will lose everything you own if you are wrong, or "things" don't work out about something, then you need to take a more in-depth look at the situation.

Think of it this way. If there is a decent chance you could lose what's important in your life, as well as THOSE who are important in your life.... Well, then you need to take a closer look at something before acting.

If you're landing an airplane (assuming you don't have a pilot's license) in a non-emergency situation, you don't use Ready, Fire, Aim.... Instead? You go get flight lessons. [I guess that metaphor breaks down, but you see what I'm saying, right?]

Know When to Improve Your Odds Before Acting

If the error cost is high...if making a mistake is disastrous, then you need to do everything you can to improve your odds before acting.

If acting today, and this hour is absolutely unimportant, then Ready, Fire, Aim, Fire serves no significant purpose.

Your child is four years old. You want him to go to college. You don't need to Ready, Fire, Aim today. There is no significant urgency.

So When Does the Success Formula Come into Play?

In goal attainment, the "WHY" is about as important as anything.

In fact, if you have a big enough "WHY" you can accomplish darn near anything.

YOUR WHY is huge for helping you actually to achieve and accomplish your goal.

In an area where someone KNOWS they have great skill, or "self efficacy," goals are not all that necessary. People with high degrees of self efficacy will perform brilliantly without goals.
What's interesting is that when people with high self efficacy DO choose goals, they tend to choose higher goals, are more committed to the goals, choose better task strategies and respond more energy to all kinds of feedback.

Clearly, "getting good" at something goes a long way toward "getting goals" in the same field.
So what is it about goals that alter performance?

Goals direct attention and effort toward the right activities. (assuming the person knows what they are doing)

They arouse effort to the level required by the task.

The promote the search for logical action plans or task strategies.

Goals encourage persistence.

Now, back to my, "I don't know."

If you ask me what my business goals are, I really don't know and don't worry about it.
I know what has to be done six months from now and either a) it will get done because I'll make it happen or b) something else more important will take it's place and I'll get that done.
In the short term, I don't formally set goals in most areas I work in. Instead I determine what has to happen and then I do it.

There is rarely the necessity of formal feedback or formal anything.

Goal setting, task concentration, persistence, completion are all pretty much hardwired. I don't "think" about it anymore.

But that took a LONG TIME to get to that point.

I was playing blackjack last month at the Venetian in Las Vegas and the table was, unfortunately, cold. The cards were favoring the house in a dramatic way. As so often happens, a player got up, yelled at the dealer as if the dealer had anything to do with the losing streak, and stomped away.

The fact is, the dealer, the cut, position at the table, NOTHING significantly effects the cards you are given beyond random chance. They are all face down and even if someone makes a bad decision and "it costs you" money, the fact is that, over one million hands, it makes no difference what the guy before or after you does. That's hard to swallow because blaming someone takes the responsibility away from SELF.

Responsibility means that when you don't make money, you only have one place to accept responsibility (which is not blame by the way) and that is in your SELF. The sole initial cause of the person's demise was their willingness to sit down at the table in the first place. That could also be the initial cause of victory but the wealthy person accepts responsibility for success and failure.

When someone says, "The pension fund went bankrupt", the initial cause of responsibility is not with the company that cheated the person out of their money or mismanaged it, but the individual's illusion that someone other than them SELF should be responsible for their life and livelihood. It's really simple math but people don't want to think about it.

You can't get paid money when there is no productivity to return for the money, or the "system" will go broke.

My fourth-grader can show anyone how this works but that's because I taught him that you need to have money in the account to take out. With pensions, it's not there and ultimately, not just an individual, but a generation will have been sold down the river.... I've never heard a wealthy person talk about "collecting" social security or a pension. Wealthy people want or demand to be responsible, at cause, for their income, passive income, wealth and legacy.

A Core Philosopy

(I get to thinking about Alabama, I think about Church...ah well...) Jesus put it best (as he often did). "To he who has much, much will be given. To he who has little, it shall be taken from." Jesus was a pretty wise man, and in my experience people who are responsible (at cause) are given more responsibility and entrusted with more ...far more than those who are not responsible (at cause).

Later Jesus also tells the story of the talents. (Talents were coins) To one man he gave 5 talents. To another 3; another 1. The first man doubled his money and Jesus applauded him for his work. The second man, given less (nothing is fair or equitable in life) also doubled his money. The third man given one, came back to Jesus with just the one talent, afraid that Jesus would be angry if he lost it. Jesus not only became angry but called the man "wicked and slothful," for burying it in the ground. The man did NOTHING with the money Jesus gave him. There was no pension in Jesus mind. Only personal responsibility and action.

Beyond a certain point, the more you give to a person, the less they can do for them SELF.

If you don't teach your kids how to cook, they will eat pizza and burgers for the rest of their lives. Teach them how to cook and they will eat well and look good for a long time. Self responsibility is a crucial differentiating factor in wealth and barely squeaking by.

And that is where YOU will be.

That is square one.

It would still take a year or two to find YOUR website but it is now a task that can be humanly accomplished.

KEYPOINT: By creating a website with the intention to GIVE PEOPLE WHAT IS HELPFUL, USEFUL, VALUABLE, FUN, or GIVES PEOPLE MEANING... you have created what WILL BE an authority website....the ONLY thing you have to do is follow through.

As you can see, the Internet is a very competitive place. Far more competitive than the real world, and that too is YOUR ADVANTAGE.

People FOLD under the choice of competition or being lazy.

You don't.

Running a successful Online business of any kind requires self-discipline. A lot of people will start an Internet business and think that they can party all night, sleep until noon and then make a living in 3 or 4 hours sitting in front of a computer. They somehow think that the world is just going to line up on their website and hand over money. It isn't going to happen.

Internet businesses do not run on auto-pilot. It is true that well-established Internet marketing gurus do not have to put in long, tedious hours on their businesses but it is a privilege that that has been earned by putting in a lot of hours.

I know a LOT of people who have made millions on the web. Most still work as much as they always have because it's fun, challenging, rewarding and exciting.

But some have long retired and that's cool, too.

It didn't happen overnight for me, for the others who have succeeded and it won't happen overnight for anybody. Most people are totally unprepared for the time investment that must be made in order for an Internet marketing business (or any business for that matter) to become successful.

No Internet Marketing Business Background?

Successful businesses aren't accidents. The proof is in the numbers....only 1% of new Internet businesses are successful and only 10% are even still in existence after the first 120 days of operation.

And all of this is by choice of the person beginning the business.

It is not even reasonable to expect to make a profit from a new brick and mortar business for many, many months if not years.

It's MUCH easier on the Internet. Your business can be profitable from day one, but profit means you made more than you spent. $10 profit is a profitable day. So is $1 or $5,000. And either of those numbers are indeed possible with the right...or wrong strategy.

You must have sufficient money OR CREATE TIME resources available to not only launch your business but provide for your own personal needs for an extended period of time. It's called 'capital' (time and/or money) and there is no way around the need for it.

If each website was a page in a fat phone book, there would be about 1000 websites (pages) in that book. If you took your three car garage and stacked 30 phone books to the ceiling that would be 30,000 websites.

Now, stack them from the front of the garage to the back of the garage on the wall and you now have 500,000 websites.

Next stack more phone books across the entire garage so the entire space was filled to the top with phone books. 15,000,000 websites. The garage is now 100% full.

As a child in the 60's, I spent my summers in Alabama.

My grandfather was the Dean of Students and Professor at a "Black College." 100% no white people for a mile around...except us.

We were the only people who were white that hung out at the College or in Church on Sabbath morning. I don't remember an exception. Pretty much no white people would go near a black church or a black school in those days.

In fact, my grandparents thrived on being different. Both were military in WW II, my grandfather was a Colonel, 20 years US Army Retired in 1961. (My grandmother was a nurse.)

That and being a psychologist created for an interesting man...and our conversations from my childhood certainly proved that we were different....(what's new.)

And for whatever reason, we were "treated" like "any other people" that were Black, except that we were White...and back then when I was a kid, we didn't really think in terms of black guy/white guy...or different treatment.... When summertime came, I was a kid in an all black community, church and college.

Maybe it was because my grandparents were good people who didn't give a rip if someone was black or white or whatever. And maybe it was that the black people saw "us" as part of the good guys. (You should know that Alabama was REALLY divided in the 1960's.)

White folk didn't "hang" with Black folk in those days. We were very... weird. You would have had to have been there...) In retrospect, it's actually pretty amazing...but it wasn't amazing then...

"quick" is the key. Getting rich is not hard. Doing it QUICK is the problem. We want our drive-through food NOW, but that will just cause you to buy an A.R.M. and then lose the house.

Choosing Success Over Failure in Online Internet Marketing...

Failure is always possible (it's really hard to fail when you have the tools at hand that you do on the web... but people can choose not to make money)...

Success Happens On Purpose

Remember those statistics! Ninety percent of all new Internet businesses fail in the first 120 days. And they ALL CHOSE THAT OPTION.

You don't have to be part of that majority. You can become a part of that 10% minority of people who succeed in Internet Marketing Online.

The Four Pillars of The Millionaire Mind on the Web

Running a successful Internet business can look so simple when you are on the outside looking in. You look at a successful Internet entrepreneur and he doesn't look like he is doing anything special but he is living the good life. It really doesn't look like he is working all that hard.

What is the Millionaire Mind-Set?

Wealth is an elusive thing for most of us.

People start on programs to build wealth and much like losing weight, they seem to fail within weeks.

For other people it is as simple as doing a few things "right." Money just seems to accumulate.

Now why is that?

Analyzing the conscious and unconscious factors of those individuals who do things "right" and contrasting those factors with those who fail, you quickly discover what works and what doesn't.

Here's a brief sketch of those with the millionaire mind-set:

Is a 54-year old man married to the same spouse for 28 years.

Has three children.

Has an average household net worth of $9.2 million; annual realized income of $749,000.

One in three (32 percent) are business owners or entrepreneurs; 16 percent are senior corporate executives; 10 percent are attorneys; 9 percent are physicians.

Is self-made affluent, i.e. 84 percent inherited less than 10 percent of their household new worth; 61 percent never received a single dollar from inheritance, gifts, estates, or trusts.

Integrated the home-purchasing decision with overall financial or wealth-building strategy.

Purchased current home 12 years ago for $560,000; valued today at $1.4 million.

Is aggresive and resourceful when negotiating the purchase of a home; 82 percent have mind-set of "being willing to walk away from deal at any time."

One in 4 searched for a "bargain" home that was part of a foreclosure, divorce settlement, or estate sale.

Has median outstanding mortgage balance of about $98,000 or about 7 percent of the current market value of the home.

Understands the key, basic success factors that the American economy rewards, i.e. integrity, discipline, getting along with people, having a supportive spouse, hard work, affection for career and strong leadership qualities.

Is four times more likely to rate these basic success factors as very important than graduating at the top of their college class or even having excellent investment advisers.

Believes that hard work is much more important in achieving economic success than genetic high intellect.

Learned much more in school and college than what was printed in the textbooks. Fully 73 percent of those with SATs under 1,000 "learned to fight for their goals because they were labeled as having average or less ability".

Nine out of 10 graduated from college. Overall as a group, they had a 2.92 undergraduate grade-point average (on a 4-point scale).
More than 8 in 10 reduce the worries associated with financial risk by: hard work, preparation, focusing, being decisive and planning. Nearly 4 in 10 (37 percent) rely on having strong religious faith to reduce such fears.
Most selected their vocation because it allowed them to use their abilities and aptitudes fully.
Married a spouse who had qualities that are complements to both a successful marriage and wealth accumulation, i.e. they are honest, responsible, loving, capable and supportive.
The "wealthy" quality was not a major factor in explaining choice of spouse.

Here's what it all boils down to....Abundance Happens on Purpose... Millionaire's become millionaire's based upon their intention and actions.

There are 8,000,000 millionaires in the United States?

91% of all millionaires started with essentially nothing and yet became millionaires. The majority of those did so before they came to "retirement age." There are eight million rags-to-riches stories in the United States. How would you like to be the next one?

Housing:

Foreclosures are a boon for first time home buyers just out of college and in their first big job. Young families are getting nice inexpensive houses for a song.

But everyone else is getting creamed.

$300,000 house two years ago? It's less than $250,000 or less this year. And in America, the land of the free and the home of the dumb where people buy things with no money down (dumb, dumb, dumb) and often with interest free loans, (really, really stupid) ...well, they are getting ready to move to apartments. Their adjustable rate mortgages are going up and they are losing money on their purchase.

People listen to other idiots who scam people into believing that, "Houses always go up."

Kevin says, "But look at what happened to Japan in the 80's."

People write and say, "we aren't Japan."

I reply, "No them there guys is waaaaaaaaaaaaay smarter than we is..."

(And that is the fact. Asians in America earn about 1/3 more than your average guy on the street, her kids get better grades and their IQ scores run about 10% higher than "normal," oh, and as a group Asians live longer than average America. Slice it however you want, with whatever explanation. Pay attention to this group of people.)

So...people who did stupid stuff now pay the price of returning to humbler lifestyles...without credit to be able to buy a new house or a new car or ....anything.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Unfortunately, that means housing at almost every level is going to take hits. Exceptions? There are always exceptions.

There just aren't enough to make a difference.

Houses today in the U.S. are probably worth 10% more than they will be this time next year. I'd make a prediction but the fact is that I just don't know. 10% seems about right...and I truly hopes it's right because it could be a lot worse....it was this last year. I figured a 10% drop and it turned out to be 14.4%.

There is ONE possibility that could turn housing prices "positive," but it has nothing to do with their values going up....later.

Nope. Housing is going to take some more hits. Places like Vegas, Arizona, California have hopefully seen the worst of all this and things might moderate there...might.

Hope is a strategy that resembles 'The Secret', which is the reason (that type of thinking) we have this disaster in the first place.

Just imagine it...believe and you can receive it.

Damn...forgot there are payments involved. Tiny detail.

Result of 'The Secret'?

Repossession and Foreclosure.

So, yeah, houses are going down in value and down impressively.

And that is way bad.

People go bankrupt and you might think,"serves 'em right," and it probably does BUT that means that a lot of banks won't get their money that they loaned, which means that people who are actually paying their bills (people like you) will have to pay higher interest rates to the very people who scam the system with bankruptcy.

Lovely....

(Just because an investment kicked butt for three years doesn't mean it will continue to do so...nor does it mean it will fall.)

So, a quick look around the U.S. and around the world.

Gas/Oil
Here in the U.S., gas prices are at about $4 per gallon as I write this. Americans are now freaking out that they will never be able to drive like hogs again and they are probably right. Gas prices are still cheap compared to say what you guys in England pay ($8-$9+ per gallon) but they are up enough here that Americans can't just go consume, consume, consume anymore without going broke.

Autos
So, makers of SUV's are going to pretty much stop making these high profit puppies. Thousands will lose jobs in the auto industry. You'd think it would be made up by people buying small cars but that isn't how life works. People don't have the money to buy small cars at this time. They're still paying off what they owe on the SUV. They'd "trade it in" but what dealer is going to give a consumer anything for an SUV? Yup, no one. People are stuck with their gas guzzlers.
So, auto industry: Not looking good.

Gas station owners?

They are in deep doo doo.

The rising price of gas couldn't have come at a worse time. The average American is ....an idiot. They think gas station owners are getting rich. That's because the average American isn't in business and doesn't get how business works.

Gas station owners are getting killed because people in some parts of the country have started to DRIVE LESS and the owners have been forced to keep profits down to keep pump prices as low as possible.

You'll start to see stations go out of business in the next year or two unless stuff changes real soon (it's not likely to change for the better...)

What about the housing crisis?

Now before we begin, do not take anything you read here as financial advice. It's not. I don't give financial advice. I'm simply a Futurist and a reporter on what's happening.

If you have been reading Coffee for several years, you know I reported that four years ago it became obvious that gold, gold stocks, oil stocks and emerging markets would flourish. (And they did.)

If you invested, you either got rich or made a lot of money while everyone else out there lost money.

I also noted that the one long-term best way to build wealth was to develop your own small business that would include very, very low overhead that wasn't an MLM.

Emerging Markets seemed to have peaked around Christmas. Gold is off it's all time highs and seems to not want to go back up over $1000 per ounce again...And oil stocks, well oil stocks have made us a ton of money, but they are quite high now and oil prices might have topped.

Even though the price of oil has risen a lot, the major corporations' share prices have not exploded this year.

(And yes, I did repetitively say the dollar would get killed but I never technically invested in a basket of other currencies, so that was just babble...no money backing up the words.)

9. The "What's Mandatory?" Strategy

The "here's what you need to (your product's benefit)..." strategy tells your prospects all the mandatory things most people need in order to gain their desired benefit from your service. You need to show them that your service offers all those things and your competition doesn't.

It's as simple as that.

8. The "Real Time Numbers" Idea

The "(no.) people are currently visiting my web site and (no.) people have ordered (add a live counter)..." idea tells your prospects how many people are viewing your offer in real time and a real time running total of how many people that have ordered and are ordering. People will get excited to see all this detailed information and know that they aren't alone.

People need to know that they aren't "the only" ones buying the new automobile or book or whatever. We feel better when we know other people are making the same decision we are.

It's human nature.

7. The "Sound Complicated?" Strategy

The "it might sound complicated but..." strategy tells your prospects that, even with your product, gaining their desired benefit might seem complicated but it's really simple when they think about it. It's just a matter of following the directions that you have painstakingly made simple and easy, and taking one step at a time. Make sure they know that you'll offer them 24/7 support in case they need you to take them by the hand and walk or talk them through it.

6. The "Happy Birthday" Technique

If this isn't the dumbest thing that works I don't know what is. I have never taken advantage of this but I've watched a lot of people use it in brick and mortar as well as online businesses. It is effective.

The "it's my birthday and I'm celebrating..." technique tells your prospects the reason for your incredible offer is because it's your birthday or because it's coming up very soon. It could be you're having a sale, launching a new product, holding a birthday type event, etc. People may want to give you a birthday gift by purchasing your product(s). Also works with anniversaries, weddings, Christmas or any other holiday or event when it's proper to give a gift.

I've never done this. It can look goofy without a bit more rationale. I have seen other major businesses and marketers use it to success.

5. The "Past Info Product" Projection

The "(no.) (months/years) ago I read a (information type product, article, forum posting, etc.) that changed my life..." projection tells your prospects that you based your new product on or got the idea for it from what you read in the past. You can tell them all the positive benefits, feelings, accomplishments, etc., that you've experienced since reading that piece of information and created your own product from it.

People want to know YOUR experience. Make sure the advice is sound of course or save it for another day.

4. The "How Much Effort?" Strategy

The "spending a little money and giving 33% effort is better than being cheap and giving 100% effort..." strategy tells your prospects they have a choice about how much effort they want to give to gain their desired benefit. Unfortunately, people usually don't want to give much effort these days (yes, even more than in the past) because they are used to getting everything instantly because of technological advances.

Create products and services that are more effortless to win and you both win.

3. The "Sorry, No Bonuses" Thought

The "sorry, I'm not offering any bonuses..." strategy tells your prospects that you aren't offering any bonuses to your product. You can tell them that what they get from your product is more of a bonus than all those junk bonuses most businesses are offering online or off.

The "if you had just one opportunity to (your product's benefit), would you?..." strategy reminds your prospective customer they will have just one shot to gain their desired benefit. It questions whether they are going to pass up their only chance to improve an aspect of their life or reach their goals.

15. The "Physical Downfalls" Hypnotic Technique

The "does not (your product's benefit) make your (a negative physical reaction)..." strategy asks your prospects if their knees shake, voices crack, throats lump up, hearts pound, palms sweat, bodies shake or heads ache without owning your product. If they have had those physical "reactions" in the past, they will want to get rid of them in the future.

Deciding by "Feelings"

The difference?

In failure, it's about "feeling" something.

People who rely on their feelings for results, fail.

Period.

And being grateful has *nothing* to do with success.

Don't misunderstand, gratitude is an enormously important experience in life, but don't try and manipulate gratitude, because it can't be manipulated.

It is a feeling and/or reasoning from events and experiences that have happened, past tense.

Thus, a perfect formula for failure.

Success?

See - Simple enough. Nice to know where you are going, but failures can know just as easily, but it IS part of the success recipe.

Believe - Certainty is crucial to success and lack of it is a direct cause of failure. Almost as quickly as you do not believe in you, your plan, working the plan, you fail.

Begin, Continue, Finish - The crux and core of success. Eliminate any of these steps, as "The Secret" does, and it is not possible to succeed.

Not probably, not maybe...you won't.

Failure happens because people don't... See, Believe, Begin, Continue or Finish.

It's as simple as that.

Just How Far Does $1,000,000 Go?

I watched that figure get lit up when I was 13 years old... in my family.

Medical insurance is a good thing but it is not the ultimate protector.

A million bucks isn't what it used to be. Three years in a hospital without treatment will wipe out that million and the rest is up to you.

Again, I have lived this in my family. It's not a stretch for me to see it happen again in my family. Goodness knows I've seen it happen in plenty of other families.

So, a million dollars saved and stashed could get you by for 20 years on an "average" American lifestyle for two people.

Let's say you have medical that doesn't exceed a million dollars over the next 20 years and you have a million stashed, you've paid your taxes, you have protected the stash...and you are OK living a very modest life in the United States, perhaps owning a small $150,000 home or renting.

If you're male and sixty years old or female and 70 years old, a million dollar net worth might just do the trick.

It's a far cry from "the American Dream" or living in a beautiful home and so forth, but it would meet a security criteria at those ages.

Most people think that having a "million dollars" would be a "WOW I'm successful," kind of thing.

It's not.

It's a survivable safety net for 20 years of living a VERY modest life for two.

The first cause of failure is that people have never calculated these facts and figured out that at age 40, having $4,000,000 stashed and safe from legal and government is probably about the right amount of money to take care of yourself and someone you love for 40 years at $100,000 per year which again, is not living the American Dream, but is more than secure in most cases...

Someone could argue that this amount would satisfy a reasonable definition of "financial success" more accurately defined as security. (And, of course, it does require that you not outlive your assets....because there is nothing left after that!)

Because people aren't aware of the numbers, they have no way of knowing that if they live paycheck to paycheck, disaster is not around the corner...the earth is quaking....now.

But...

It doesn't mean they will fail...or succeed.

And...

...either result is very possible AND controllable.

Paycheck to paycheck, living in terror of losing the house, the kids, and so on.

...and from that point failure and success become choices.

The First Factor of Failure

The first factor of failure is visualization.

Visualization neither causes failure or success.

The very same, "visualization" can cause success or failure.

It's not going to predict....anything....

So what is the difference between success and failure?

Let's consider some other definitions.

What is "Success"?

Success, as I define it, is the ability to weather the storms of life without destroying your ability to care for yourself and those you love...the ability to build during the harshest of storms.

Success can be measured in monetary units in many cases.

Success could be having a million dollars of protected, after-tax assets in excess of debt.

Desire, attempt and accomplish it...success.

Most people want to simply be a millionaire.

That can vaporize in two minutes.

You don't want to be a millionaire. (And by the way, people's lack of crystal clear definitions is one of the most significant of all causes of failure.)

In other words, a million dollars of assets that you have already paid taxes on and that is protected from the everyday lawsuits and whims of government is waaay different than being a millionaire.

A million dollars could provide a comfortable living based on 2008 standards for 20 years if $50,000 per year paid all the bills.

And you could easily succeed at achieving that outcome, but, I would suggest that you don't aspire to that as an ultimate financial outcome.

Why?

Here's just one reason...

Most people have no idea that medical insurance is not a "forever deal." When you read your policy, you'll see that medical insurance caps out around a million or two million dollars in total payouts.

In other words it's there, it's great but once you have had the company pay out a million bucks, it's finished, complete, kaput, over, done....

You're probably thinking, "that's nothing to worry about..."

Hmmm....

The Definition of Failure

Working from the definition, it's pretty easy to see that, if failure is the opposite of success then... to not desire, not plan and not attempt would eliminate failure and success.

Does that make sense?

Once again:

If people don't desire, don't plan and don't attempt, they can neither succeed nor fail.

And *THIS* is most people's desired place to be.

Biggest Elements of Failure

Fear of failing is big. Big enough that this fear all by itself is enough to paralyze a person.

Hook this up with someone who needs to spell every word WRITE (oops right) and you have a walking disaster. Perfectionism happening outside of neurosurgery, open heart surgery and airline mechanics is a devastating schema and the cause of millions of failures.

People don't want to be seen as "failing," so they simply do not "attempt."

Then they can not be SEEN as failing. They simply are failures.

Here's the deal.

Axiom of Success and Failure

For the person who attempts 3 projects per month or year, they might succeed at all 3 of them.

Another person has a bigger "to do" list and they attempt 300 projects per year, fail at 150 and succeed at 150.

THAT is the metaphor of the success axiom...and that of failure.

So that's easy enough...the math for one of the axioms of ULTIMATE success and failure.

But let's muddle things up before we find clarity....

People who succeed and people who fail have some obvious things in common.

They breathe, eat, sleep, jog, work out, read, play games, strategize, they have talent, they have skills.

Both successful people and failures can also be Christians and atheists, Jews and Wiccans. Success and failure share common roots of black, white, and/or yellow skin. Success and failure comes from every continent (though clearly certain cultural and political climates favor the possibility of individual success in a significant way).

Failures know what they want in life.

Failures often make plans.

Failures often get education...a lot of it.

Failure and success....

Funny thing is that from certain vantage points, they look so much alike.

Many of the factors of success are also factors of failure.

People assume that because success and failure sound like opposites, that the ingredients that create the two "results" are exclusive of each other.

In other words, if eating vegetables makes you healthier and eating junk food doesn't, you might carry that cause/effect analogy to everything else in life.

Good causes good. Bad causes bad....

Except that isn't true...

There ARE distinguishable characteristics of success and failure.

But, thinking that the characteristics and ingredients of success and those of failure are opposites is a big mistake.

In fact, it is a huge mistake and one of the factors of failure!

People often believe that by using a success recipe they should be successful right away, or soon. And then they aren't.

They eventually give up and return to their life of quiet desperation.

The Definition of Success

There are multiple definitions of failure and there is ONE definition of success we will use today.

Some people jump to "happiness" as being a definition of success, or, the lack of "happiness" as being failure.

Some people think that they are living a "happy life" because they choose it.

That is nearsighted thinking and an over-sized crock of hoo-ha. (hoo-ha is a technical scientific word for bullsh...)

You can be happy today and have your child hit by a car on the way home from school.

How's that "happy life" sound now?

So, reality check the meta-nonsense stuff. Happiness is indeed partially interpretative, but it's also biology and circumstances beyond your control.

Happiness doesn't intersect with success beyond randomness.

Happiness and success aren't intersecting circles.

Back to failure.

Failure doesn't intersect with happiness, either.

But, failure is a huge part of ultimate success...
and
Failure is a huge part of ultimate failure.

The very same failures can trigger success or ultimate failure.

To succeed is to win, overcome, to achieve.

Specifically, the agreed (dictionary) definition is that:

success
n. 1. the achievement of something desired or attempted
2. the attainment of wealth, fame, or position
3. a person or thing that is successful [Latin successus an outcome]

What I found out was how much people were angry with each other after the experiment was over. One couple who had gone out the night before, didn't speak after the game. Even taking away a few bucks from someone in a game, in a class, can cause people to have intense hostile feelings toward each other.

The rich didn't get richer -- at least not in my game under my rules, or under other scientists' recent studies.

Newest Behaviorial Study

According to a new study of behavioral economics, published in the April 12, 2007 issue of Nature, people will spend their own money to make the rich less rich and the poor less poor. They do so without any hope of personal gain, acting, it seems, out of a taste for equality and sense of fair play.

Earlier research has demonstrated that people are willing to incur costs to punish and reward others, especially in scenarios where every player's contribution to a common pool results in greater benefits for all. But in those cases it is hard to tell whether the actions are motivated by egalitarian preferences for similar income levels or a desire to enforce norms and encourage group cooperation.

So James Fowler, associate professor of political science at the University of California, San Diego, doctoral student Christopher Dawes and their coauthors set up a game to see if there's a drive for equality.

The results suggest that a form of material egalitarianism is more than just a long-held ideal of utopian philosophers and political theorists. With not only self-interest but also group cooperation removed as factors, people still, at a cost to themselves, gave money to the poorest players and took it away from the richest.

Fowler and colleagues believe that their experiment shows that egalitarian motives, to some extent, underlie the evolution of cooperation and reciprocity in humans. "One of the reasons we cooperate may be because we care about equality," Fowler said.

Real-world analogues for egalitarian preferences, said Fowler, can be seen in the wide acceptance of a progressive tax and a social welfare net.

"If people didn't have a taste for equality, then I would expect the world would be even more unequal than it is," he said. "It has not been fully appreciated yet how much people are willing to level the playing field and how much this determines our ability to cooperate with each other."

A total of 120 volunteers took part in the experiment over six sessions, playing the game five times in groups of four. Group composition changed with each game and players' game histories did not follow them. In other words, reputation and retribution were not allowed to play a role.

Participants were randomly allocated different sums of money. They were shown what each player got and presented with a choice to do nothing and maintain the (unequal) status quo or to reduce their own real takeaway pay by one monetary unit in order to either increase or reduce another player's income by three units. Outcomes of each game were then displayed.

In all, income alteration was frequent: About three-quarters of participants reduced or increased another player's income at least once and about a third did so five times or more.

Subjects who had received more than the group average were penalized most frequently and most heavily, at a rate of about three-quarters of a unit for each unit above the average. In contrast, those that started out with considerably less than the others got sizeable gifts, at rate of about eight-tenths of a unit for each unit below the average.

The pattern of behaviors had the effect of equalizing income. It also did not change as players gained experience with the game (and so could clearly see that there really was nothing to be gained from their costly actions). Furthermore, it didn't seem to matter whether individuals had themselves been the targets of an increase or reduction in the previous round: They continued acting as they had, either redistributing winnings according to apparently egalitarian principles or, as was the case with a minority, concentrating wealth in the hands of a few.

The researchers capped their experiment with a questionnaire designed to elicit emotional reactions. Players expressed the greatest levels of annoyance and anger in a hypothetical situation where one player got far more than they had. And the players who felt this way the strongest spent more to equalize the distribution.

The Egalitarian Society

"Equality" is an interesting concept.

And we find that people really don't like to see that other people have "more" than they themselves do...

Take people out of real life and put them in a University laboratory and some mind blowing things happen.

What we find is that people choose to punish people who work hard and succeed in order to bring them down to the level of non-success that they experience. And, they are willing to spend a lot of their money to do it!

(If this sounds like politics, I heard it, too.)

I did an experiment with a group of people in an adult setting a few years ago. People in the class were given random amounts of money and had choices to share it with secret members of the audience or not, based upon offers given to them, by me, representing each secret member. It was simple. The audience member could take $20 they were given in one dollar bills and split it between someone on the panel in any way they suggested. The only catch was the person on the panel had to agree to the split or give the money back to me.

So, if a guy offered a girl $1 and he'd keep $19, it takes no rocket scientist to figure out that the gal on the panel should accept the split. Otherwise, all twenty dollars returns to me.

Make sense?

Of course it makes sense.

It's simple logic.

But people aren't logical and they don't think.

Something Better Than Nothing?

Almost everyone puts the kabosh on these wide splits. The people on the panel were always comfortable with 50/50 splits and about half the time they accepted $7 when the audience member suggested they keep $13.

Obviously the people on the panel should ALWAYS agree to ANY split because otherwise the money just all gets returned to Kevin who is running the game. And that is indeed what happened with MOST of the money as the day went on.

Once everyone decided to accept or not accept splits from secret audience members, I wrote on the flip chart how much money each person had. About half had no money. Some people had as much as $10. Of those that had money about half of them had $5-7.

Next up, I gave $10 to each of the poor people on the panel. Now all the people who had nothing to start with (those who were stupid enough to not take a split whatever it was) were the richest or equal to the richest. Instantly the impoverished were "moved into the mansion."

Then I went to the people who had money from their decision to accept a split.

I told them I would give them $3 (to each person) or each person could take away $6 from anyone on the panel. However, no secrets. They would have to name the person and have me write down the remaining amount of money for that person on the board so the class could see it.

Now logically, every person should take the $3 and be happy. It's free money. But that isn't what happens. What happens is that people start pecking away at the people with the most money and pull them down to a level closer to their own income. Pretty soon, no one on the panel had more than $5 and I was getting money back in droves.

The richest got hit first. Then the middle class....until everyone was poor.

Given another round where I would give them $3 or they could take away $3 from someone, they typically chose to punish the person who had punished them.

Instead of taking the $3 and being pleased, they chose to take away from those with a few dollars left and impoverish them.

Now, I have to confess that I didn't invent this "game." Scientists have been playing variations of this game for years with participants all over the world.

Even if the publisher paid you an advance (not the case on the vast majority of books in print), you still have accomplished....nothing.

You have done nothing to build momentum.

Most people think that their work is now done at this point. And that's why only about 1/2 of all books ever sell out of their first print run of even a small number of books like 5000.

Nothing has happened...

The ILLUSION of "happened," is there but it is indeed an illusion.

Only when you take the dozens of daily actions that it takes to get your book into other people's hands have you begun to build momentum.

No momentum, no achievement.

Everything you do from writing the first chapter of the book to getting it to the publisher has absolutely no value, and, to the publisher, it has negative value because they paid to print the books!

You've done THOUSANDS of actions to come to the point of ZERO.

Those actions lay the foundation for potential success, but they are only the foundation, and success is only possible, contingent on NOW BEGINNING.

This is where 97% of people quit.

The book arrives at the door. I open it up, "looks cool."

We are now at zero.

Now comes the part where you determine whether your child (book) will be successful or not.

You are now at a DecisionPoint.

You've spent a year writing, rewriting, editing, researching, developing and so forth...and yet TODAY you begin.

This is the same for the gymnast who trains for a decade to get to the point where there can possibly be a reward for having worked her whole young life.

So the author starts doing radio shows and TV shows and seminars and teleseminars and podcasts and pretty soon the book picks up a little momentum.

The snowball at the top of the mountain slowly begins to dawdle down the slope, it begins to get a little bigger...little by little...slowly and then all of a sudden it's huge and moving on it's own.

You've NOW reached...

You've reached...the Tipping Point.

Momentum is now in control. It (the book, the project, the gymnast) has life of it's own.

This is the point that everyone dreams about in life and never does the things necessary to get the snowball to the top of the mountain in the first place.

Tipping Yourself to Success
The Tipping Point happens and the world is different now.

They start calling you instead of you calling them.

You are now in demand.

You have what they want now instead of them having what you want.

The world is very different from here on out.

You Can Train Your BrainTraining your nonconscious brain to "wait" for YOUR decisions is very important. As soon as you create the new habit, the nonconscious mind will indeed take over for you and it won't "look back."

One of my greatest frustrations in life is watching people FINALLY moving out of their comfort zone, FINALLY beginning the journey to ANYTHING other than their current misery, and then they STOP. They literally stop in traffic, look at the cars coming and they look at the undercarriage of the cars as they get run over because they didn't assess the results of their initial action and then follow through with the next logical ACTION.
Example: Someone writes a book. They get it into print and then they do *nothing* to sell it. Thus wasting hundreds of precious life hours to create a leverage instrument only to tell the world that their life-time is not important.

Instead, they might start ANOTHER DIFFERENT project and the result will be the same.

Example: "How ya' doin' Kev?"

"Man, I'm tired. I think I'll take a break."

STOP.

This is where most disasters begin.

"Tired" and "Break," need to stop going hand in hand.

Obviously, you need breaks in the course of the day. But you need to schedule those breaks into your day at the beginning of the day...for the life-day that you are in charge of.
You must teach your nonconscious brain that it is getting new programming...TODAY.

What's cool is that the nonconscious part of your brain will become your ally in just a few weeks, sometimes less, doing all the "thinking" for you again, with all of your new programming.
But it won't have any reason to pull the plug on old programming, if you do "a little each day" or go back to the stimulus response of "tired"/"break."

Sustained Momentum Leads to Success

Once your nonconscious mind is retrained, you'll start to develop a bit of momentum. This indeed part of the REAL Secret for how to get rich and develop millionaire mind and your millionaire thinking. When you want to become one of those next millionaire next door, people, this is something you want to work on.

Caution: Metaphor Alert!

The problem with just the three part formula, Ready, Fire, Aim, is that the metaphor presumes NOT shooting a second time.

I want to make sure you understand that beginning a project or the project, or business, TODAY, is REALLY important.

THIS IS the "DecisionPoint" between success and failure.

It's very difficult to "start it" tomorrow when you realized the necessity today and then clicked the "pause" button.

As you know, the same thing happens all the time with the pause button. It stays there for 3-10 minutes and then the TV show on the channel kicks in over the DVD.

The DVD goes off.

No more movie.

The TV comes back on. You turn the DVD player back on in a bit and with most DVD players, this is when it starts over at the beginning...not picking up where you left off.

Interestingly, superior DVD players pick up right where you left off because they have been programmed to pick up where they leave off.

(Are you one of those DVD players?)

You know the answer far better than I do. How about the people you coach?

Another good metaphor....

A Little Each Day?

Actions can be rendered impotent by starting a project or small business and then not finishing the process of carrying it out to it's completion.

More importantly, actions can be rendered impotent by setting out to do something and then doing "a little each day."

The problem with this old notion is that most people are only used to doing a little each day and in order to build anything into success whether your kids wanting to become ice skaters or gymnasts, you wanting to learn Karate or Kung Fu, wanting to start a small business, wanting to write the book....all require the same basic actions and reference points.

So what matters TODAY...not like, I'll do that tomorrow...like...TODAY?

You must begin.

You must continue, today, beyond some point of comfort.

This means that when you "get tired," or friends call or the door bell rings, you continue on what you were doing. The crucial piece here is that you are teaching your nonconscious brain that YOU are running your own brain now, and are no longer in reactive mode.

Reactive mode is where something in the environment happens and you take your attention from what you are doing to what is random.

Certainly there are good things about external awareness beyond your current task. But most people are still compelled to pick up the phone, answer the door, or do just about anything instead of something they are working on that is new and then a little uncomfortable.

Individual vs. "Team" Goals

When I hear about baseball players with individual goals to hit 50 home runs, I worry about the TEAM because when individuals set individual goals for a very narrow aspect of a team game, then yes, it's more likely the person will get close to that 50 BUT the team could easily suffer. There's an awful lot of situations in baseball where you don't want the batter to try and hit a home run. The chances of hitting a single and driving in a run can be several times more likely than hitting a home run and thus improve a team's chances of winning dramatically. Players who constantly try to hit a home run when a single is all that is necessary, don't help the team.

The same is often true in business.

The fact is that team goals or group goals are just fine.

I like a player like Derek Jeter of the Yankees who COULD hit 50 home runs OR hit .330 but he doesn't try to do either. Instead he's a SITUATIONAL player and probably the best in baseball. He does whatever it takes for his TEAM TO WIN.

That is what I want on my team. I don't care if someone nails down a speaking engagement for me. Doesn't matter. There's plenty more out there. What I care about is did the person REPRESENT the BRAND (Kevin Hogan) correctly.

Goals are not really outcomes when used most efficiently. Instead they are yardsticks for performance measurement.

The Least Acceptable Result

In The Psychology of Persuasion, I talk about "the least acceptable result" in Outcome Based Thinking, and, it turns out that that is a powerful measure of effectiveness and performance. What is the LEAST ACCEPTABLE RESULT? And that is your true goal that you WILL achieve.

The antagonists in goal setting and goal getting are usually summed up in the phrase "Instant Gratification."

Your goal is to lose 22 pounds. You see food that isn't on the agenda.

Your brain wants instant gratification. In fact it all but DEMANDS it.

Stop Instant Gratification in its Tracks

If you want to have ANY HOPE OF ACHIEVING your goals, you need to PUT THE FOOD AWAY, lock it up and DISTRACT yourself from instant gratification.

When people are losing weight, they should do things like take a walk everyday.

Because a walk will help burn calories?

Sure, that's nice.

But it's not 1/5 as important as BEING AWAY FROM FOOD FOR 30 minutes.

When you are out for a walk you are NOT NEAR THE REFRIGERATOR.

And therein is a secret of success.

Do something to get away from the possibility of instant gratification and you move closer toward your goal. IF that distraction actually benefits the actual achievement of the goal, so much the better.

Say you want to earn $131,400. You see yourself at $81,000 in July, and you know you are on your way based upon the simple math of the goal.

And people are more likely to perform well when the goal is seen as believable based upon their knowledge, their training, their skills. When people know it CAN happen because they CAN make it happen, performance increases.

Now, I keep mentioning, "performance increases."

That's the deal.

Being on Track

Just because you set $131,400 as an income goal, do we remotely care if we get $131,399 vs. $131,401 (well ok...we care)? It's not so important whether you get $131,400 or a dollar more or less. But it is important that you performed well. Say over $111,000 achieved vs. someone with a goal for $150,000 and achieving only $107,000.

Usually hitting a goal right on the nose is not very important in real life.

What matters is increasing and optimizing performance with specific and difficult goals, that are possible and believable.

AND that you have some kind of feedback system to help you know you are on track.

Sometimes I just blurt out, "I don't know."

I'm going to come to why that is shortly.

There are two crucial elements in goal setting and attainment.

The degree of the goal.

The intensity of the goal.

These two things will determine in large part whether you will achieve the goal.

You can have a millionaire mind. You can become the next Millionaire Next door.

The more difficult a goal and the more specific the goal is, the more likely you are to have high performance.

Now, that doesn't mean that you will attain THE goal, it means that those two factors integrate into high performance, top performace, the best overall results.

Make sense?

I don't like money goals, but let's use one for simplicity's sake.

Goal is to earn $100,000 next year.

OK, that's good but $131,400 will likely create better performance because the brain perceives it as more specific.

A lot of people think you should set easy goals.

Nothing wrong with that, just realize they lead to much poorer overall performance.

Difficult goals.
Specific goals.

Data from almost 1/2 of a MILLION people shows that this is what works. This is not some new age philosophy or what "Kevin thinks," this is what works in real life with real people all over the world.

Goals should be difficult and specific.

OK, that's in the SETTING of the goal.

(Continuing) Education for Life

Another element that differentiates people who have vs. have not, is education. Those are the folks who are the millionaire next door, and what is millionaire thinking. There are two kinds of education, both are important, and you need to have a lot of at least one to live well and you need the real-life education materials if you are going to get to six or seven digits annually.

Almost every wealthy person (someone who has earned and MAINTAINED, you know, yes, a millionaire) I know has an ENORMOUS personal library. I had a big library four years ago when I had well over 4,000 books, tapes and CDs (which I began donating to charity and giving to friends.) Today we're down to about 2000 books and programs. It's mighty empty but it feels rewarding to have given half away!

One of my favorite personal libraries I've ever seen is that of Jeffrey Gitomer. He doesn't just have a lot of books and an incredible system for finding them instantly. What does Jeffrey Gitomer have? He has autographed copies of crucial books. That says something. He puts emotion onto and into his knowledge base. When there is emotion, there is retention and action follows. I don't think Jeffrey will mind me telling you that he has a library of what appeared to me to be in excess of 10,000 volumes and frankly, everyone who earns six figures or more annually, that I know, has a huge library.

I've gone to Barnes and Noble many times with my dear friend Elsom Eldridge, author of The Obvious Expert. He typically walks out of the store with two armfuls of books...no exaggeration. I usually leave with 4-6 books. I like to visit BN at least weekly.

On my table right now is a book about China, one about the psychology of love, another about happiness, another about Buddhist philosophy and therapy, a book about investing, commodities, and those are just the non-fiction books on the coffee table. Over to my right on the floor... here are books about Stanley Milgram, 5 books about cognitive and neuropsychology, neural organization and function, 4 books about religion and spirituality, 6 books about asset protection and wealth structuring, and a total of seven books about women and how they buy both planned and unplanned items. There are also, CD's and DVD's...and well...you get the picture.

Implement New Ideas Constantly

I want ONE idea or strategy from each book. I will definitely implement it. I always do. That book will be worth at least $1000 to me if I get ONE idea. If I get five ideas, that's going to be worth at least $5000. Some ideas and strategies aren't measurable in dollars but in ...love points...giving or receiving...or in emotional gratification of some kind....There are exceptions but if I can look at your education library, I can tell you about what you are worth or will be worth shortly.

Books that have bibliographies in business and personal development programs from people who have DONE IT, will make you a lot more money than those without. Why? Because there is a level of thought and dedication that happens when you write and incorporate others' ideas who you want to credit.

Understanding one man's isolated experience, while interesting, is not that useful when it comes to building wealth. I will sometimes buy a book without a bibliography, but if it's not fiction, I won't hold my breath...because it might just be! Sometimes the ideas I get are about what NOT to do when I write a book, or what NOT to do in life. What NOT to do in business or raising kids.

Focused Action Orientation

The next factor in differences between wealthy and those who are not is focused-action-orientation. People who say they want to be wealthy want to have all the lights green. I just want the first one green...and sometimes I'll wait at the red light for it to turn green. That's what wealthy people do. It's terrifying to people who have not been taught to have a focused-action-orientation. Literally fear-provoking. That's understandable, but not forgivable.

Once someone experiences the fear of moving to the next step, that is when they MUST move or they will forever be paralyzed. There's so much to say about this I couldn't fit it all into one brief article.

People who don't become wealthy find other things to do with their "down time" than building an empire. I can't remember having been bored once in 15 years. There are times I wish would have been...maybe...but when I hear someone say they were bored, had "down time", there is one thing you know for sure about that person.....

The power of....

Delayed Gratification

You cannot delay gratification on your real life education.
You can't delay it on investing.
You can't delay it on starting your small in-the-house business and making it GO, but you must delay gratification elsewhere.

As a rule of thumb, if you can write it off on your taxes, you can spend money for it. If you can't, wait until you can enjoy it without the guilt and shame that comes with needless debt. Debt for knowledge is the single best investment on the planet if you get the right information. Debt for buying real estate is good if you get the right properties.

Debt for most other things is not so good....

Living Under Your Means

The other way you can tell how much a person will have in five years is by comparing the automobile they drive with their annual income. If the retail cost of the car is more than 50% of the annual income, and the annual income is lower than $100,000 per year, the person for all intents and purposes can't become wealthy. In the United States an automobile is directly tied to status for most people. It's such an easy comparison.

Most wealthy people don't drive the most expensive car they can find. Annual income divided by 10 is the maximum a car should cost you including maintenance and fuel. If someone spends more than 10% of their income on transportation...and they don't fix that problem...they are making it very, very difficult to become wealthy. Almost impossible. I know a lot of people who make $40,000 annually only to have a $25,000 car. That math precludes wealth. It's simply...not...possible. The worst case scenario is that the person earning $40,000 after taxes annually must spend no more than $4,000 per year on their payment, insurance, fuel and upkeep. Exceed that and it becomes very difficult to enjoy life, be happy and become wealthy.
